IP = Ingress Protection. Two digits: first = dust protection (0–6), second = water protection (0–9).
Common ratings:
-
IP53: Limited dust protection + light rain (splash resistant – most budget phones).
-
IP67: Dust-tight + up to 1m for 30 minutes (good for accidental drops in sink/puddle).
-
IP68: Dust-tight + beyond 1m (usually 1.5–6m for 30 minutes) – standard on flagships.
-
IP69K: High-pressure, high-temperature water jets (extremely rare on phones).
Important caveats:
-
Water-resistant ≠ waterproof. Liquid damage is not covered by warranty on virtually any phone.
-
Ratings apply to fresh clean water only (saltwater, soapy water, chlorine will degrade seals over time).
-
Seals naturally degrade over 1–2 years (drops, repairs, heat, age).
-
Never charge a wet phone – wait until fully dry.
